As one of the foundational pillars of your SDDC, software-defined storage is at the heart of your data.

The software-defined data center is the new mindset moving forward that allows your business to be as agile, automated, and abstracted from underlying hardware infrastructure as possible. VMware vSAN was a product of this new way of thinking with an official release of vSAN in 2014. VMware was a pioneer of the Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) concept which it coined back in 2012 to virtualize all aspects of the data center including compute, network, and storage.

Pros & Cons of running a VMware vSAN storage solution. What are the licensing, host, storage, and networking requirements?.In this post, we will take a deeper look into VMware vSAN. The features and functionality with each new release of vSAN continue to raise the bar for competitors to the product. VMware vSAN is continuing to pick up many new customers with each new release. The dominant leader in the enterprise data center when it comes to software-defined storage is VMware vSAN. Software-defined storage offers great benefits for housing your production virtualized workloads.

Most hardware and software companies are jumping on the bandwagon to offer software-defined storage solutions. In the settings list, select Advanced Settings.Ĭ of the software-defined technologies that have gained tremendous momentum in the past couple of years is software-defined storage. If the vCenter Server system is part of a connected group, select the server you want to configure from the Current vCenter Server dropdown.Select Administration > vCenter Server Settings to display the vCenter Server Settings dialog box.To increase the timeout limit: vSphere Client: If the network is fine you can increase the timeout of this check using the VMware KB 1005757 article (ESXi host disconnects intermittently from vCenter Server). Click the Ask VMware link above for more details and a resolution.Īs written the problem could be related to high load of vCSA and/or hosts, but of course it could be also really related to network issues. This behavior can be an indication of a congested network between the ESX/ESXi hosts and vCenter Server. ESX/ESXi hosts send heartbeats every 10 seconds and vCenter Server has a window of 60 seconds to receive the heartbeats. If vCenter Server does not receive the UDP heartbeat message, it treats the host as not responding.

This issue occurs when the UDP heartbeat message sent by ESX/ESXi hosts is not received by vCenter Server. If you click on the warning message you will have a better problem descrition: Note that in this case there is also a warning for some hosts that are not patched for CPU specific bugs. You may see this warning message: ESXi host connectivity with vCenter Server ESXi host connectivity with vCenter Server

One test that can fail is about the latency between vCenter Server and the ESXi host, expecially in a vSAN environment where the vCSA (or the ESXi hosts) may be busy. Usually it checks for bad drivers, CPU bugs, know problems.īut it also make some tests to check some services or measure some latency. You can check the overlall health with your vSphere Client, by selecting the vCenter node and then Monitor | Health.Īs explained in this blog post, vSphere Health works to identify and resolve potential issues before they have an impact on a customer’s environment and contains more than 30 different health checks that can be run against a vSphere environment. One interesting news of the latest version of vCSA is the health monitoring feature.
